Structure will replace an aging structure and provide critical passage for residents and tourists in the town of St. George

(Bolton, Ontario) – 13 March 2019Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, noted today that it has been awarded the contract to furnish a single-lane permanent replacement of the Magaguadavic River Bridge No. 1 in St. George, New Brunswick. The crossing is one of several in the town, where the river meets the Bay of Fundy.

The replacement project is part of a larger New Brunswick bridge infrastructure investment announced in January 2018 for the construction, replacement and restoration of numerous structures in the region. It is anticipated the investment will contribute about $500 million in GDP across the province through 2021-22 and will support about 1,600 jobs annually.

The Acrow bridge will be 54.9 meters (180 feet) long and 4.2 meters (13.8 feet) wide, with an epoxy aggregate-coated steel deck and a CL-625 ONT Truck load rating. The design of the multi-level bridge is quite unusual as the vehicle deck will be located on the top level, with a separate bottom level carrying a water main and sewage pipe. The structure will also be equipped with a 1.5 meter (5 feet) wide sidewalk erected outside the bridge at the top level.

“With installations across the province dating back to 1972, Acrow bridges have proven themselves as effective, permanent infrastructure solutions,” said Ken Scott, President, Acrow Ltd. “Like every Acrow product, this bridge will be constructed entirely of high strength galvanized steel and designed and built to withstand the harshest elements.”

Bill Killeen, CEO of Acrow Bridge added, “Our prefabricated modular steel bridges are an ideal choice for cost-effective and rapid permanent bridging needs. Our customizable components can be engineered for many different applications, are virtually maintenance-free and have an estimated life span of 75-100 years.”

Acrow’s structure was purchased by the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NB-DTI), the project owner, and CBCL Ltd. is providing design engineering services. The contract for installation has not yet been awarded. The timeframe for the bridge construction is anticipated to be May – October 2019.
